Vehicle Importation
Importing a car from the UK to Ireland involves a process that includes several steps and considerations. Here is a short, detailed description of the car importation process: VRT
Research and Preparation:
- Research the specific car model you want to import, including its specifications, value, and availability in the UK.
- Consider factors such as import duties, taxes, and other associated costs, as well as any legal requirements and restrictions.
Purchase and Documentation:
- Once you have found the desired car, complete the purchase transaction with the seller in the UK.
- Ensure you receive all the necessary documentation, including the vehicle’s logbook (V5C), a receipt, and any relevant service history or maintenance records.
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT):
- Contact the Irish Revenue Commissioners to determine the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) applicable to the car based on its CO2 emissions and value.
- Calculate the VRT using the appropriate rate, and be prepared to pay this tax upon importing the car to Ireland.
Vehicle Inspection:
- Arrange for a vehicle inspection through the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) in Ireland. This inspection ensures the car meets safety and environmental standards.
- Book an appointment and have the car inspected before proceeding further.
UK Export and Transport:
- Inform the UK authorities about the vehicle export. The seller may handle this process or provide the necessary paperwork.
- Organize transportation of the car from the UK to Ireland, either by using a professional car transport service or by driving it yourself.
Irish Customs and Import Procedures:
- Declare the importation of the car to Irish Customs upon arrival.
- Submit the required documents, including the vehicle’s V5C logbook, purchase receipt, and inspection report, to the Irish Revenue Commissioners.
Paying VAT and Duties:
- Pay the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the car’s value, which is currently 23% in Ireland. This tax is based on the vehicle’s purchase price, including any VRT paid.
- Additionally, consider any customs duties or levies that may apply, depending on the car’s country of origin.
Registering the Vehicle:
- Once all taxes and duties are paid, register the car with the Irish authorities.
- Provide the necessary documents, such as proof of address, proof of ownership, and any other requested paperwork.
Vehicle Modifications and Compliance:
- Ensure the car complies with Irish regulations regarding headlights, speedometers, and other required modifications.
- Make any necessary modifications or adjustments to bring the vehicle into compliance with Irish standards.
Insurance and Road Tax:
- Obtain insurance coverage for the car from an Irish insurance provider.
- Pay the annual motor tax (road tax) to the Irish authorities, which is based on the car’s engine size, CO2 emissions, and other factors.
It is important to note that import procedures and requirements may change over time, so it is recommended to consult the relevant Irish authorities and seek professional advice to ensure compliance with the current regulations.

Import Declaration
Since the UK’s departure from the EU, import declarations between the UK and Ireland have become necessary. Importers must submit accurate and complete declarations to the Irish Revenue’s Customs AEP system. Traders require an EORI number and must undergo customs clearance, including presenting the import declaration and supporting documents.
Import duties and taxes may apply, and specific rates can be found in the EU’s TARIC system or by consulting the Irish Revenue. Safety and security declarations might be required for certain goods. Additional considerations include complying with sanitary and phytosanitary controls, product standards, and regulations. VAT and customs duties may also be applicable. It is crucial to stay updated on the latest regulations and consult relevant authorities for comprehensive and accurate information.
Our team of professional experienced staff understands the UK and Irish customs procedures and regulations and we ensure that customs clearance documentation is completed in the most compliant, cost-effective, and efficient way.
What we offer:
- Cost-effectiveness and a precise duties-payment process
- Efficient data entry management on all documentation
- Document compliance review reducing the risk of penalties, costly delays, and inefficiencies of managing multiple vendors

Export Declaration
In light of the UK’s departure from the EU, exporting goods from Ireland to the UK now entails the need for export declarations. Exporters must accurately and completely submit these declarations to the relevant customs authorities. To engage in export activities, businesses must possess an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number. The export declaration contains crucial details about the goods being exported. Adhering to customs procedures and regulations is essential for exporters.
Depending on the nature of the goods, additional requirements, such as safety and security declarations or compliance with product standards, may be necessary. It is vital to remain up to date with the latest regulations and procedures, while also seeking guidance from appropriate authorities or customs agents to ensure a smooth and successful export process.
We can assist with all your export requirements from Ireland to the Rest of the World (ROW) and the United Kingdom (GB).
What we offer:
• Compliant and accurate export filings
• Origin management of export merchandise and licenses
• Document compliance review
